Game: St Duthus FC v Invergordon FC (Macleod & MacCallum North Caledonian League)
Date: Saturday, January 27th, 2018
Venue: The Links Playing Fields, Tain
Referee: John Nicolson
Assistant referees: Andrew Bannerman and Daniel Jack
THE WORST of the January weather is behind us now as we look ahead to a game of football on Saturday. Recent attempts to play the North Caledonian Cup Semi Final match with Halkirk have been unsuccessful -- but before the fixture can be attempted again we must turn to the small matter of the Easter Ross derby. On Saturday, St Duthus welcome their nearest rivals - and reigning league champions - Invergordon to the Links for what will be their first Macleod & MacCallum North Caledonian League game of the new year.
2018 got off to a good start for St Duthus with a big win up at Helmsdale against Bunillidh Thistle in the cup. The team appeared not to have missed a beat over the festive period and they have been training regularly during the down time in between postponed games in January. Only Sam Beeston, Lewis Ross and Martyn Farquhar will be posted as absent for Saturday's match, all due to work commitments, while Ewan Ross remains on the sidelines due to injury. New signings Glenn Fell and Barry Kenny are expected to be in contention for a place while forward man Ben Bruce, who joined the Saints for a short term deal towards the end of last year, has now returned to the US.
Lauding good numbers at training, Team Manager Stuart Ross was in bouyant mood this week.
It’ll be fantastic to get back to football at the weekends following a lengthy break due to weather conditions. We’ll be looking to pick up where we left off in Helmsdale almost a month ago now following our win over Bunillidh. Since coming back from the festive break, the boys have been looking sharp and hungry and have maintained that attitude and shown the same determination in training. They continue to turn out in great numbers, as ever, and are now vying for places in the squad for what should be a keenly contested local derby. Invergordon cannot be taken lightly. They are the league champions and they will be coming here looking to get their title race back on track for 2017-18. We will be looking at this as an opportunity to put some points on the board and get back up the table as best we can. This game is our opportunity to kickstart the second half of our season.
Invergordon are expected to have a full squad at their disposal, not having played a league match since the last meeting between Saints and themselves on November 18th. Their only competitive game since that time has been in cup action against Golspie Sutherland, losing 3-1 at King George V Park in the quarter final of the North Caledonian Cup earlier this month.
As ever, supporters of both clubs are more than welcome to join us at the Links for the game. Our tea hut will be open, selling teas, coffees, hot food and snacks throughout the game, as well as our 32 page full colour match programme which will be on sale.
