St. Duthus Under 17s opened their new season with a trip to play fellow Highland League U17 North contenders Dingwall this past Sunday. Missing a handful of players due to holiday commitments during the summer, the team had not yet played together, and in the absence of any friendly matches this would be the first time that the squad had assembled for a fixture.
The game would prove to be a baptism of fire for the Tain lads as they found themselves 1-0 down at half time. The Young Saints weren’t without their chances though. Shadi Ali and Taylor Anderson were both unlucky not to get on the end of some good balls into the box and were it not for some last ditch Dingwall defending, the score at the break could well have been reversed.
A freak goal from Dingwall's Jack Fletcher straight from the restart all but killed the contest for Saints before they could try to get back into the game; goalkeeper Alex McDonald left powerless to prevent his strike from the most acute of angles along the byline.
Two further goals for Dingwall rounded off a 4-0 win for the home side, but there were plenty of signs in the St. Duthus’ youngsters' overall performance that with more minutes on the park, they shall be amongst the pack again this season.
