St. Duthus advanced to the quarter final of the Jock Mackay Memorial Cup with a comfortable 4-1 win over visitors Bunillidh Thistle today, as the curtained was raised on the new season.
There were debuts for Adam Allan and Craig Munro as well as Stefan MacRitchie who took a place on the bench, while the returning Jon Campbell started in midfield. Strikers Scott Miller (unavailable) and Ben Bruce (injury) missed out on the game as Liam Rostock and Jake Lockett took up the forward line.
In the dreich, unforgiving rain and wind it was St. Duthus who made the better start as the feeling out process began.
The opener arrived after 23 minutes and it came for the home side. Receiving the ball on the right touchline, Ross Tokely crossed for Cammy Mackintosh to meet the ball with a powerful header directed low into the net, leaving Cameron Yuill with no chance.
It was Mackintosh with the head again again on 37 minutes to make it 2-0, this time from close range after new signing Craig Munro made his presence felt with a well taken corner. Jake Lockett made it three shortly before the break, lifting the ball over Yuill from inside the box after getting on the end of a superb pass from Campbell.
Bunillidh did manage to pull a goal back following the restart when substitute Sean Scott punished a failure to clear a dangerous chance across the face of goal, but the reduction in the deficit proved immaterial as Saints' lead never appeared under threat.
Having made several substitutions, Saints continued to create chances and could have extended their lead, Jon Campbell and Andreas Broomfield coming closest in the latter stages. During the final twenty minutes of the game both sides had the ball in the net following offside calls.
With thirteen minutes remaining though, it was left to Broomfield to complete the scoring with a well taken goal, his first for St. Duthus, turning and slotting under Yuill after receiving a through ball from Campbell.
The win sends St. Duthus into the quarter-final of the competition, to be played on September 14th when they will meet Halkirk United in a home tie.
