Game: Golspie Sutherland vs. St. Duthus (Football Times Cup Final)
Date: Saturday, January 18th, 2020
Venue: Dudgeon Park, Brora
Weather: Sunny intervals (5°)
Referee: Eddie Nichol
Assistant referees: Malcolm Macleod and Colin MacDonald
This weekend St. Duthus play reigning North Caledonian League champions Golspie Sutherland for the second week in a row - this time with silverware on the line as they contest the Inverness Trophy Centre Football Times Cup Final.
For Saints, they shall be hoping it will be a case of second time lucky, having already missed out on the Jock Mackay Cup earlier this season. They will also be hoping to put to bed a disappointing couple of results over the new year - and what better way to do it than to win a cup to get back to winning form.
In a stark contrast to their last cup final appearance, St. Duthus go into this game at full strength, boosted by the return from suspension of Craig Munro, with new signing Scott Maclean also available for the tie.
Manager Stuart Ross was full of praise for the way his charges went about their business last week, albeit in defeat.
A look at the history books will show that St. Duthus and Golspie last met in a cup final just two years ago in the North Caledonian Cup, playing on the latter's home soil of King George V Park. Saints won that day with a stunning performance and a 3-1 win - their first and only silverware since their revival in 2016. It took Golspie two years to exact revenge on their Tain counterparts, with a 3-2 win recorded just last Saturday. The game last weekend was a very close one, with Saints having led 2-1 at one stage before an 89th minute winner scored by Eoghann Davie snatched the points for the home team. The game was evidence enough that there is very little between the sides and if last week's display is anything to go by, entertainment will definitely be on offer!
The cup final itself faced a late venue and date change due to fire damage at its original location of Grant Street Park in Inverness and is now being played at Dudgeon Park, the home of Brora Rangers Football Club.
Kick off is 2.30pm on Saturday - and entry is free. With no other games to compete with across the North Highlands, we wish to invite one and all to join us in supporting the Saints in their efforts to win the Football Times Cup and turn 2019-20 into a trophy winning season!
