A former pupil of Tain Royal Academy, Steven was a youth with Inverness Caledonian Thistle before signing as an amateur with Brora Rangers in 2003. He remained at Dudgeon Park until moving to Bonar Bridge as the Sutherland club's first choice goalkeeper in 2008 for one season before eventually moving to his hometown side of Tain Thistle during what would be their final campaign in the North Caledonian League. Two further spells at Brora Rangers followed, between 2010 and 2013, and again between 2014 and 2016, either side of short stays with Alness United and Strathspey Thistle.
A free agent, Steven became the first signing made by managers Stuart and Andrew Ross following the club's revival in 2016. An experienced custodian with a great voice, Steven has confidence in abundance and as well as distributing the ball well and possessing good shot stopping ability - he has a particular penchant for penalty kicks - having saved many more than he's conceded for Saints in his first two seasons.
In 2018, he moved to SHFL side Clachnacuddin, where he spent a season before moving on to Brora Rangers. In the summer of 2020, he made a return to St. Duthus.
